A Short History
Kilberry Parish Church is a small Georgian style category B listed building built for the Church of Scotland in 1821. The church itself is actually in Carse overlooking Gigha and Jura surrounded by land rich in farming and forestry.
Back in 1821 until after the second world war, the Kilberry road mainly comprised of farming estates employing local people in many different roles. The church was the central meeting point for residents from as far as Torinturk to Kilberry so every Sunday there was a large congregation where the whole community would come together.
However, as times changed, so did the road. Dwindling congregations and costly restoration determined that the Church of Scotland could no longer sustain running the old parish suggesting it would have to be privately sold.
In order to preserve and restore the building a group of residents formed a trust on 21st October 2021. The Trust acquired title of Kilberry Church from the Church of Scotland on 24th February 2023 and rebranded the building and charity as ‘Kilberry 1821’, with a vision of creating a Community Hub.
A group of dedicated trustees and volunteers host a variety of fundraising events for the community by the community. So, whether you've lived here all your life, have just moved in or are just passing through - Everyone is welcome.
